Episode 10: Native American pathways into social work

Julian G. Garza

Julian is from Fresno, California to a first-generation Mexican American father, George Garza, and a mother of both Native American (Pascua Yaqui Tribal member) & Mexican American descent, Rachael Moreno Garza. He served in the US Air Force for five years. Julian started working in the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, earning his BSW from ASU. He relocated back to Fresno, working for Owens Valley Career Development Center. Julian received his MSW at Fresno State in 2015 and developed the Native Family Education Gathering. He returned to Tempe, Arizona working with Phoenix Indian Center, Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, and Gila River Indian Community Tribal Social Services. He is currently employed as a medical social worker with Hospice of the Valley, serving patients and their families in Mesa, Scottsdale, Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, and Fountain Hills. His favorite titles are a father to Isabella Moon Garza, and spouse to Rainey Lee Garza.
