Episode 14| S2: A conversation on feminist activism in universities

Jessica Schulz (she/they) is a passionate feminist scholar activist from California’s Central Valley. With degrees from Fresno State and Iowa State Universities, Jessica aims to help institutions of higher education support student victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, and marginalized communities, through scholarship, action, and centering students.

Jessica’s research focuses on the ways that institutions of higher education can, do, and don't support students who are victims and survivors of sexual, dating, and domestic violence. This includes current practices of campus survivor advocacy and Title IX, and how we can move towards community and anti-carceral practices of supporting victims and survivors, especially learning from the work of Black women and other communities of color. Additionally, they analyze the language/statements institutions use when speaking about sexual, dating, and domestic violence to understand the power dynamics underlying the discourse. Jessica is also interested in advancing critical consciousness in higher education, focusing on critical action, and how we can encourage individuals to move from reflection and understanding into action to advance equity on campuses.

Work/life negotiation is important to Jessica, and outside of academia she spends time with her son and cats, and enjoys reading, hiking, and music.
