A conversation with Dr. Christal Oghogho Spel
Christal Oghogho Spel (Nigerian/Finnish) is a researcher, lecturer, and social entrepreneur. She is presently a visiting researcher, affiliated to the Social and Public Policy Unit, Department of Social Research, University of Helsinki, Finland. She holds a Ph.D. in Social and Public Policy from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and an MSc in Development and International Cooperation from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher at the Social Policy department, School of Graduate Studies, University of South Africa, Pretoria. Her research interests center on migrants’ wellbeing, immigration governance, migrant youth education and social participation in Finland, and Africa regional integration. As an academic, she is committed to bridging academic theory to societal development and contributes to society building through her research and registered NGO, YEPP ry. Dr Spel has collaborated with several African migration experts in edited book projects focusing on African migration management and regional integration. She is published in regional and international journals and has written several blogs to call attention to social issues experienced by African immigrants, women and micro-entrepreneurs. Her current project examines the agency, aspiration and apathy of migrant youth in Finland. She is the founder of Youth Education Performance Program (YEPP) ry. YEPP ry is a social enterprise that develops and implements projects and services that support the education and social participation of minority and underrepresented youths ages 9 -18 in Finland.
